There are many criteria that job posters examine when determining which application to choose, but there’s no denying that the Proposal, or as Upwork refers to it, “cover letter,” is the most important.
COPY AND PASTE TEMPLATES ARE NOT TO BE USED.
First and foremost, if you’re doing this, stop. They are ineffective.

These are easily identifiable from a mile away.
Stop doing it right now if you’re doing it.
I appreciate the thinking that copying and pasting a generic proposal saves time, but it’s also unproductive.

The Wrong Way to Write an Upwork Proposal

* I have Done many jobs.
* I have too many years experience.
This framework demonstrates a complete lack of empathy for the client’s predicament.
It doesn’t even acknowledge the problem that the client is attempting to fix. Nobody is interested in who you worked for or how long you’ve been doing it. They’re interested in whether you can identify and solve their problem.
What Is the Best Way to Write a Upwork Proposal?
If you know how to structure a proposal, it’s ridiculously simple. This is the EXACT format I use for every proposal I write.
Restate their main issue.
After a brief “Hello!” in this case, I reiterate the customer’s concern in their own words.
“I understand you need assistance offloading and modernising some of your finance processes in your expanding company.” There are a few reasons why this should come first, and I’ll go over them in more detail in later posts, but for now, trust me when I say it’s critical.
Assure them that you can assist them in solving their problem and that you can begin right away.
This is the one part of my proposal that I don’t modify too often.
“I can help you with that, and I can start right immediately,” I assure them. The important thing to note here is that the client is searching for assistance with a problem they’re encountering.
They need a solution now, and they need it now. You’re giving them a picture of a solution on the horizon by telling them you want to help them and that you can get started right away. That’s exactly what they want.
Explain why you’re a good match for this job.
Then I write two or three phrases on why you’re a good match for me. It does not have to be long just for the purpose of being long. Tell your upwprk client why you’re the best fit in a concise manner.
Describe how you’ll lead them through the process.
For me, this is the area that varies the most. I’ll spend anywhere from two sentences to two paragraphs detailing the road I’ll take them down, depending on how explicit the job posting’s requirements were. Give them a sneak peek into the process you’ll be taking them through. I believe this is where you can get away with a little bulk if you’re going to elaborate on any of the sections of your proposal. Tell them about the first few things you’d do with them.
Attach your work or link your portfolio to show your previous work to your upwork client that is well-designed and documented will go a long way toward establishing your trustworthiness.
